Who we are: El Gremio de San Lucas

El Gremio de San Lucas was born to promote, structure and elevate avant-garde figurative painting through a comprehensive ecosystem of support for the artist. Although the current umbrella was formally consolidated in 2025, the project traces its roots back to 2017, when we launched the first edition of our artist residencies — the seed of everything that makes up the network today.

Made by and for painters

El Gremio emerged to address a clear gap in the contemporary circuit: the need to weave a real, close-knit community among painters. Historically, the painter's craft has been marked by the solitude of the studio. In response, we conceived a space run entirely by artists, because no one understands the real needs of painting better than those who practise it.

We place particular emphasis on dialectics and critical thinking, actively training creators to defend their work and discourse with conceptual rigour in a cultural environment deeply dominated by words and institutional theory.

What sets us apart: judgement and excellence without intermediaries

What makes El Gremio de San Lucas different lies in its independence and its criterion for evaluation: painters are the ones best equipped to judge another painter's work.

In an art scene often diluted by commercial inertia or passing trends, we firmly champion technical excellence — understanding technique as the indispensable vehicle that amplifies, without diminishing in the least, the expressiveness, emotion and conceptual power of the work. What's more, it is precisely through mastery of technique that one can truly express and move.
